Forget everything you think you think about Ryan Reynolds’ star turn as Deadpool. Or at least, forget some of it. Yes, he breaks the fourth wall, and yes, he’s insanely annoying – but along with those famous character traits, he also seems to experience attraction towards people from all gender spectrum. Although recent live-action movies have revolved around him, comic book canon has long affirmed Deadpool as a quirky character. Therefore, given the diverse sexuality that has already been displayed Miraclemidnight sonsI expected Deadpool’s DLC appearance to be a rainbow delight – and I was not disappointed.

bizarre representation in marvel’s midnight sun is refreshingly understated and mundane (not the way I usually describe Deadpool, but we’ll get to that in a bit). For example, the game gender-swaps the Caretaker and puts him in a long-term Sapphire romance with Agatha Harkness. That’s right, the witch made famous wandavision dating a woman in midnight Sun, (I use the present tense here because, although Agatha is dead at the beginning of the play, she is not actually stay long dead.)

despite that inclusiveness midnight Sun, I wasn’t sure what to expect from Firaxis Games’ take on Deadpool, as his representation in the comic books has been anything but consistent. I love that his crush on Cable goes beyond platonic bromance cable and deadpool #20, and since then I’ve clung to the authenticity of Wade’s queer identity, even though many writers have ignored it over the years. Deadpool’s appearances in other media usually haven’t even referenced his queerness, and I don’t just mean the Ryan Reynolds movies. Deadpool cameos in Marvel vs Capcom games and even a High Moon Studios game dead pool (2013), make her a flirt and a womanizer, but not so much that she’s a gender-doesn’t matter.

There’s one thing about Deadpool that has remained consistent over the years and many adaptations: Nolan North is the go-to voice for the character. Even Ryan Reynolds’ performance draws inspiration from North’s version, especially the first time North voiced Deadpool in a direct-to-video animated film. hulk vs, (2009). That movie isn’t good – I should know, I rewatched it recently for my X-Men podcast – but Nolan North’s performance as Deadpool remains a beacon of hope. It makes sense, then, that after that scene-stealing twist, North went on to play the role in several more video games and reprise it once again. midnight Sun, I’ve played or seen almost all of Wade Wilson’s adaptations, and midnight Sun version is – so far – as queer as Deadpool.

I guess I should also note that, as a queer person, I have mixed feelings about the extreme heterosexual trope, which Wade Wilson fits to a T. Not only is he gay, he’s also proof that superheroes midnight Sun There should be a human resources department (and several sexual harassment seminars). But because the game features Wade’s ridiculousness as well as extremely generic queer characters, I’ve allowed myself to enjoy him and his ultra-outrageousness. That’s my deliciously problematic fave.

Firaxis’ DLC adds the Merc with a Mouth to Midnight Sun via three new story missions. Deadpool gets his own customized lineup of attack cards, and he’s not hard to learn; Between her dual pistols and katanas, she has a number of quick short-range attacks that make her better suited against individuals rather than enemy swarms. Her story arc also introduces her own supervillain – Sin, the Red Skull’s goofy vampire daughter – and a new enemy type called the Vampire. In addition to providing characters with the opportunity to crack jokes about casting “vampire” magic with Y, Vampires also have some fun and challenging new combat mechanics (they can deal self-inflicted bleed damage to your attacks – Meaning, your own attacks will start dealing bleed damage to you instead of your enemies).

It’s not exactly sunshine and rainbows. Some of Deadpool’s jokes ring a little hollow. In a mission with Hulk, I had to endure Deadpool commenting on how the big green guy’s testicles were falling out of his briefs. (Why, Wade? Why?) Also, Deadpool periodically yells “Insert catchphrase here!” It gets old.

Deadpool's DLC for Marvel's Midnight Sun includes an unlockable food truck, featuring spectacular side-by-side art of Deadpool riding a unicorn with a rainbow in the background. The version of Deadpool on the truck has a speech bubble that reads,

That said, I spent far more times laughing at the DLC than rolling my eyes. Wade Wilson wields the disciplined vampire hunter blade in basically every mission. Blade responds with weary irritation, but not (thank goodness) hatred or homophobia. Blade and the other superheroes’ main problem with Deadpool is that the infamous mercenary mercenary is secretly working with Doctor Doom, and that’s more annoying than his silly flirtation.

Best of all is the strange and unlikely friendship that develops between the player character (The Hunter) and Deadpool. Never in my life did I expect to feel sorry for Wade, but I strangely fell in love with the way he hung his head in shame after being reamed by the blade. Wade gently mocks Hunter for making friends with every single team member regardless of their personality or politics (very typical of a video game protagonist). His reluctance to get closer makes the final relationship all the more meaningful, and the jokes along the way are earned—especially Wade’s jokes about how much he hates himself, and how he uses humor as a defense mechanism. uses.

though midnight Sun It has its hits and misses when it comes to character development – I leveled up my friendship with Tony Stark, but I didn’t enjoy a minute of it – the Deadpool DLC hits the mark well, with most of the character While emphasizing the annoying qualities of gives, the tenderness within her burst forth. His playstyle in combat didn’t exactly blow my mind, but his personality was a real draw for me, and the writers got that part right. Firaxis has three more DLC packs on the way, each featuring a new character, and after Deadpool’s arc, I can’t wait to spend more time with the next weirdo who joins the squad.
